What is GitHub Copilot?

GitHub Copilot is the most widely deployed AI coding assistant. It suggests code as you type inside VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, Visual Studio and Xcode, and extends into chat, terminal help, pull-request summaries and automated code review.

Because it is GitHub's own product, it reaches further than editor autocomplete: it reviews PRs, explains diffs, and — through Copilot Workspace and coding agents — can take an issue and open a pull request against it.

A free tier exists with monthly completion limits, and paid plans start low.

Benefits of GitHub Copilot

Why it is the default:

  • Editor coverage. First-class support in essentially every major IDE.
  • Inline completion that is genuinely fast and unobtrusive.
  • Repository context. Chat can reason about your whole codebase.
  • PR review and summaries built into GitHub itself.
  • Model choice across several frontier models on paid plans.
  • Enterprise controls including IP indemnification.

Who Should Use GitHub Copilot?

Effectively every professional developer should at least try it.

  • Developers in any mainstream language or editor.
  • Teams already on GitHub — the PR integration is the differentiator.
  • Students and open-source maintainers, who often qualify for free access.
  • Enterprises needing IP indemnity and policy controls.

If you want an AI-native editor rather than a plugin, Cursor is the stronger option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GitHub Copilot free?

There is a free tier with a monthly allowance of completions and chat requests. Copilot Pro is $10 a month, and is free for verified students, teachers and maintainers of popular open-source projects.

Which editors does it support?

VS Code, all JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, Neovim, Xcode and Eclipse, plus chat and review directly on github.com.

Copilot or Cursor?

Copilot for breadth — it works in the editor you already use and integrates with GitHub PRs. Cursor for depth — it is a purpose-built AI editor with stronger multi-file agentic editing.

Does Copilot see my private code?

Business and Enterprise plans include policy controls and state that customer code is not used to train models. Review the current data-handling terms for your plan.

What is the coding agent?

You assign a GitHub issue to Copilot and it works in the background, then opens a pull request with the proposed change for review.

Does it come with IP indemnification?

Yes, on Business and Enterprise plans — GitHub offers indemnity against copyright claims arising from suggestions, subject to the terms.
